The four children
Every Inkwren story exists in all four children, and every single-story download includes all four. Nobody has to guess which child to buy, a reader can find themselves in the set, and siblings or classmates can each have their own.
All four wear white low-top canvas sneakers. Their clothes, their hair and the rooms they move through stay exactly the same from the first page to the last — that consistency is the point, not the decoration.
The four children are drawn with different skin tones, hair and features so that more readers can find a stand-in for themselves, and every purchase includes all four. Maya, Leo, Jaylen and Mei still don’t personally use an AAC device, glasses or a mobility aid, though in School Days you’ll see them reach for ear defenders when a room gets loud. That pack also introduces two more people at school who do use tools we hadn’t shown yet: Sam, a classmate who talks with an AAC device, and a teacher who uses a wheelchair — both taking part in an ordinary day, the way they are.
Maya has medium-brown skin and dark curly hair gathered in a top bun. She wears a sage-green tee and light-blue jeans, with white low-top canvas sneakers — the same tee, the same jeans and the same sneakers on every page of every book she appears in.

Leo has light skin, freckles across the nose, and short copper-red hair with a side part. He wears a mustard tee and navy shorts, with white low-top canvas sneakers. His haircut is drawn for his own hair, in the haircut book and everywhere else.

Jaylen has deep brown skin and short coily hair with a low fade. He wears a terracotta tee and charcoal joggers, with white low-top canvas sneakers. The fade is drawn the same way in every book — including the one set in a barber's chair.

Why it matters
A reader who is using the pictures to build a mental model of what is about to happen is reading the details, not skimming past them. If the child in the story has a different face on page four than on page three, the picture stops being evidence and starts being a puzzle.
So we build each child from a fixed reference sheet, art-direct every scene against it, and review every page before it goes into a book — same face, same clothes, same sneakers, same room.
